Ottawa Attractions

The parliament buildings are without a doubt the main attraction for tourists however Rideau Canal is a key point of interest for boaters in the summer and skaters in the winter. It was named a World Heritage site and spans 125 miles reaching down via lakes and rivers to Kingston and Lake Ontario.

In the city of Ottawa, restaurants and park pathways make the canal a popular spot. You can visit the Bytown Museum, a small museum dedicated to the history and construction of the Rideau Canal.

The National Gallery of Canada and Canadian War Museum are the key museums to see. The National Gallery of Canada houses some of the most well known works of Canadian art including paintings by the Group of 7.

Hotel Chateau Frontenac Quebec City

The Hotel Frontenac or, Le Chateau Frontenac as it is commonly known, opened in 1893 and sits atop Cap Diamant making it an extremely prominent landmark in Quebec City.

The Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1885 officially linking the province of Ontario with British Columbia, a promise made to her upon her entry into Confederation. The task now fell to the marketers of the day to draw the wealthy tourists to the trains and to the vast Canadian territories opened up by the CPR.

One of the ways they sought to do this was to build exquisitely grand “chateau” hotels at the most picturesque spots along the railroad. The first of these hotels was the now famous Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta.

Regina Saskatchewan – The Oasis in the Canadian Prairies

Regina stands out like an oasis in the middle of the Canadian prairie desert. The capital city of the province of Saskatchewan has 180,000 of the province’s 968,000 residents. The other major cities on the Canadian prairies include Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Lloydminster have their attractions, but Regina seems unusually forested and green for a prairie town.

If you’ve never been to the prairies of the Great Northwest, it can be described as flat, very flat. Big sky country is a term often coined for the prairies since you can see from horizon to horizon. The tallest things that might block your view are the few grain elevators that store the region’s major agricultural product – grain.
